“This is simply one of the greatest clubs in the country. With its rich tradition and great reputation for always having good music, the Continental Club seems to be a hot spot for anyone who really likes music. And if you go, you just may find yourself sitting next to Julia Roberts or Johnny Depp. You never know at the CC. And that’s why bigger acts always make a stop here on tour. As far as musicians are concerned, there’s no better place to play…or go.” ~CitySearch.com

Hello everyone! Are you ready for the R-U-M-B-L-E? Of the engines, of course!

AUSTIN, TX IS THE HOT ROD CAPITOL OF THE WORLD FOR THE LONESTAR ROUND UP APRIL 5 & 6TH
Over 1,500 hot rods and custom cars roll into town, and gearheads from all over the world gather together for a homegrown Austin weekend of vintage cars, live music, artists and more.

(Austin, TX, April 2013; source: Lonestar Round Up) – The Lonestar Rod & Kustom Round Up will kick off its 12th annual year in Austin at the Travis County Expo Center (east of downtown at 7311 Decker Lane) Friday and Saturday April 5 & 6th, 2013. What started as a small gathering of hot rodders, artists and musicians on a small football field in Austin, is now one of the biggest and best traditional car shows in the world. And since we’re in Austin, we’ve also made it a great live music festival with amazing bands entertaining onstage while everyone enjoys checking out miles of amazing vintage rides from hot rodded Model T and Model A Fords from the 1920s and 30s to custom Chevys, Buicks, Mercurys, Cadillacs and more from pre-war to the early 60s. Some cars are adorned with custom candy and metalflake paintjobs, pinstriping or flames and dressed up in shining chrome - while others are more concerned with pure horsepower like the nostalgic alcohol-fueled dragsters who fire up their engines for an earthshaking “cacklefest”. Each car is as unique as the person who built, rebuilt or customized it. These cars are driven here by their dedicated owners from all over the country, and fans from as far away as Sweden, Italy, Japan and Australia now make the Lonestar Round Up a yearly pilgrimage.
• “This show brings together all of the best aspects of 50s Americana: Hot Rods, Custom Cars, Music and fishnets” – Steve Wertheimer, owner of the Continental Club and co-founder of the Lonestar Round Up.
• “Its the best show in North America and its right here in my backyard” – Jimmie Vaughan, Austin music legend and car fanatic.
• “The Lonestar Round Up is around the corner where plenty of good sights, good eats, and good sounds abound. Roll in and Rock on…! Be there…!” – Billy F. Gibbons, guitarist and frontman for ZZ Top, and lifelong car customizer.
In addition to the huge car show and live music performances (including acts like TX Soul legend Bobby Patterson, Austin favorite Junior Brown and the lovely Tanya Rae, and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Guitar Legend James Burton and more) the Round Up also features an art show with some of the most creative and talented kustom culture and automotive artists working today. Shop from a unique line up of vendors who will be selling everything from haircuts and makeovers to vintage clothes and handmade art and jewelry. A giant swap meet offers vintage auto parts and accessories, signs, and collectables. In the rodeo arena, there are mini-bike races each day where participants speed around the dirt track in front of a mob of cheering fans for bragging rights. Plenty of food and drinks from local food trucks and vendors will keep you going as you explore all there is to see and do. It’s a great weekend for friends and families to come and enjoy this uniquely Texas twist on a celebration of the American automotive art form. Kids under 12 are FREE and so is general admission parking. Admission is available at the gate, and is just $15 for a weekend wristband that is good for entry both Friday and Saturday. Gates open at 10am both days.

P.S. We’ll also be featuring hot-rod inspired art by Philadelphia photographer Mark Havens in The Continental Club Gallery during April!

Here’s a message from El Jefe about the upcoming festivities:

Southern Culture on the Skids will once again be at the Continental Club all week long starting on Tuesday April 2 and playing 5 big nights through Saturday April 6 with support like Barfield The Tyrant of Texas Funk, The Jungle Rockers, Bobby Patterson, The Jade Idol, James Burton, and the Wulftones. Also if you are hanging around on Sunday, Heybale, The Wagoneers, and Casper Rawls will be at the club on Sunday.
Here’s this year’s live entertainment at the Travis County Expo Center on Friday and Saturday April 5 & 6:

Friday April 5th:

2:30 Soul legend Bobby Patterson & The Disciples
4:30 Junior Brown and the lovely Tanya Rae

Cruise to South Austin and join the Model Citizens Car Club for the Giddy Up Git Down at Giddy Ups (12010 Manchaca Road) Lots of parking, live music - and donations benefit a local charity.
Or head north to a classic Austin hang-out Top Notch Burgers (7525 Burnet Rd.) for an old school drive in - hot rod movies show in the parking lot after dark till 10pm.

Saturday April 6
11am Deke Dickerson
12:45 Morry Sochat & the Special 20’s
2:30 Ed Cannon and the Royal Rhythmaires
4:30 Rock n Roll Hall of Famer James Burton
That Night:
Head north to a classic Austin hang-out Top Notch Burgers (7525 Burnet Rd.) for an old school drive in - hot rod movies show in the parking lot after dark till 10pm.
The Strugglers and Los Cochinos car clubs host a party at the Poodle Dog  Lounge (6507 Burnet Rd) starting at 9pm - Live music and Free cover.
See a special screening of Mad Fabricators Society Volume 7: TEXAS - at Jo’s Coffee Saturday April 6th at 10pm, and pick up a DVD out at the show. This volume features footage from the Round Up, the Revolution, and more. Is anyone having more fun than we are here in Texas? I don’t think so.

There are also shows in the Jo’s parking lot (across the street from the Continental Club) on Friday and Saturday after 6pm. There will also be parties with live music at Giddy Up’s (South Austin/Manchaca) on Friday evening and at the Poodle Dog Lounge (North Austin) on Saturday night. Also don’t forget about Top Notch Drive In up north. Bottom line there is a ton of cool stuff to do and see while you are in Austin and it does NOT all revolve around S. Congress. As a matter of fact S. Congress has just become a frustrating mess most of the time especially on weekends and I mean any weekend…….not just the LSRU weekend which is exponentially more crazy. Get out and explore and drive your car around town and see the sights and experience what this town & all these great car clubs have to offer. Don’t sit in traffic unless that’s just your thang.

Music Supervisor Thomas Vale - Next Big Things on the silver screen

By William Harries Graham

I’ve discovered incredible music while watching TV and films.

The song my friend Ramona Beattie performs that I most admire remains “Moon River,” a song written specifically for Audrey Hepburn’s voice in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

When I saw When Harry Tries to Marry, I really liked the music and a couple of years later I found myself playing and writing songs with the film’s music supervisor, Sarah Sharp.

I discovered one of my favorite bands, the Boxer Rebellion, in Going the Distance. My neighbor Justin Long plays the guy who’s going to break the band and take them to the next level while romancing Drew Barrymore.

I recently watched the pilot for new TV series The Americans. The episode starts off with Mick Fleetwood steadily pounding until he finally erupts into “Tusk.” The episode ends with Phil Collins. The music supervisor strategically placed two of the most famous drummers of the Eighties as bookends for the episode.

Over the years, music for the screen has changed. It’s more about discovery than hiring the next Henry Mancini, although some people, like local composer Graham Reynolds (A Scanner Darkly, Bernie), still build careers out of it.

Last week I went over to Thomas Vale’s house, of Frog Music Licensing, to ask him more about the process. Vale started out as a music fan helping film students. Then he started working on the HBO hit series Six Feet Under.

“I have relationships with music supervisors now,” explains Vale. “What I do is follow projects they’re working on and figure out what kind of style of music they’re looking for. I’ll send them a compilation and they’ll also send me requests looking for a specific thing.

“They detail what they need and I put together ideas to give them.”

Vale works with over 70 Austin musicians, including Ghostland Observatory, Ben Kweller, my dad Jon Dee Graham, as well as up and comers like the Eastern Sea and Quiet Company.

“A lot of shows want new stuff,” says Vale. “They want music that’s about to be released or has just been released. Most music supervisors in TV enjoy breaking new artists or new music. They like to be the first to get it out there.

“In the commercial world, they chase whatever’s hot. Whenever there’s a big hit band there tends to be an echo effect, people wanting that sound. In TV I don’t see that as much.”

Vale’s recently worked on Sons of Anarchy, The Following, Royal Pains, and several Canadian shows.

It’s exciting to hear music that you know on shows, especially if it’s your dad, which happens to me once in a while. Last year I heard one of my favorites, Matthew Ryan out of Nashville, on Parenthood, another show that Vale works on.

Listen closely next time you’re watching TV or a flick. If you’re from Austin, there’s a good chance you might just hear someone you know.

Bill Carter - Unknown (Unison Music Group)

Reviewed by Raoul Hernandez

Songwriting mercenary Bill Carter takes both names and prisoners on Unknown. Three decades of Austin-centric compositions in league with his wife, Ruth Ellsworth, cements to his resume covers by Waylon Jennings, Ruth Brown, and most famously, Stevie Ray Vaughan (“Crossfire,” “Willie the Wimp”). On a rare disc of his own, Carter drops yet more names, namely streetwalker “Eva Bible” and the “Devil in Evilin.” An expert weave of folk and blues led by Carter’s expressive tenor – think a down-range Jimmy LaFave (“Final Sacrifice”) – Unknown rocks its rich Southern rock Dylanesque, layered in guitars alongside a voice of rhyme, reason, and outrage (“Deep Soul Sermon”). Opener “Fire on the Wire” pulses with a roots-hewn Dire Straits fluidity underscored by Randy Weeks’ slide guitar, plus a lyric equally lubricated by a silk-tongued trickster (“I can’t find a drink of water standing in the pouring rain”). Mumfordians will recognize the rolling collusion of Carter’s mandolin and shoefly fiddle from Terry Allen cohort Richard Bowden on “Revelry,” while the state of the great new American songbook, “Amerijuana” (“I smoke marijuana, play Americana”), plays for a belly laugh. Heartfelt centerpiece “Anything Made of Paper,” written for the West of Memphis documentary and included on its soundtrack, boils down incarceration to a heartbreaking detail. That’s the tune someone’s probably covering at this very moment.

The Continental Club History is always an ongoing project for me. If you have stories or photos to share, I would love to hear/see them! I’ve posted several photos of the refurbished CC sign from 1987 on our photo page. I’m now I’m also getting together with Mrs. Jeanette Brown regarding the early years - her family owns the 1200 block where Amy’s Ice Cream & Zen are located. Mrs. Brown has many early photos & stories for me! Jennifer Luna, the granddaughter of previous operators, Gilbert & Jo Kathryn Grovier, hooked me up with her mother who shared some of her memories of The Continental Club. I’ve also found a lot of information on The Continental Club’s very first residency band - The Mascots - from 1955! You can even hear 6 of their songs on MP3. However, national, state, and local governments under support music education. The Foundation has given thousands of guitars to schools, and children’s and veteran’s hospitals, and will continue this effort. Now, the Foundation is prepared to expand its music education program, facilities, and partnership outreach through their many community outreach programs. The James Burton Foundation is a 501c3 organization.

• Four years ago, Austin Pets Alive! set a goal of making Austin a no-kill city and we never once doubted that, of all cities, Austin would be able to do it. On March 1st, 2011, Town Lake Animal Center announced that in the month of February their Live Outcome rate was 92%. The No-Kill goal is 90% so not only did Austin reach No-Kill, we passed it! Donations to Austin Pets Alive! are always gladly accepted. Short on cash? Also, consider that Austin Pets Alive! is always in need of more foster homes too. The number of lives they can save is directly related to the number of foster homes they have. Fostering a pet for as short as 24 hours can save its life. Click the links if you would like to foster a pet or volunteer your time. Austin Pets Alive! has moved to 1156 W Cesar Chavez St, Austin, Texas 78703
Austin Animal Center has moved to its new larger location at Levander Loop, Austin, Texas 78702. 512-978-0500. Please call 3-1-1 for assistance with an animal issue after business hours. After 60 years of operation the Town Lake Animal Center closed on Nov. 9, and reopened as the Austin Animal Center in a new state-of-the art facility that is designed to provide a safer, healthier atmosphere for lost and homeless animals and for visitors who come to get a pet. It’s modern features allow for more efficient and effective care by staff and volunteers, including vastly improved facilities for animals with injuries or illness. Austin Animal services runs the largest animal shelter in Central Texas, providing shelter to more than 23,000 animals each year and animal control services to all of Austin and Travis County. The Animal Center is an open-intake facility where stray and owned animals from Travis County in need of shelter are accepted regardless of age, health, species or breed. It is the goal of the Austin Animal Center to place all adoptable animals in forever homes. Austin Animal Center calling for volunteers!
Humane Society of Williamson County - A non-profit, No-Kill shelter! 10930 E. Crystal Falls Parkway, Leander, Texas 78641. Call (512) 260-3602 for more information. The Humane Society of Williamson County (HSWC) is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization founded in 1979. HSWC is 100% funded by donations, grants and fees for services. They receive no government funding. Their mission is to provide innovative programs and services to eliminate pet overpopulation and to improve the lives of pets and people. On March 1, 2007, the HSWC implemented a “No-Kill” sheltering model. With the opening of the Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter - the new municipally-operated facility to house all stray and owner-released animals in the area - we have refocused our life-saving efforts towards community services and programs that will enable Williamson County to become a safe place where no adoptable pet is euthanized simply because it cannot find a home. With more clearly focused programs to support our mission, we can achieve more to move our community toward a No-Kill community. The combination of high volume adoptions, accessible and affordable spay/neuter services along with programs to help families keep their pets are the keys to building a No-Kill community. There are no good guys or bad guys in the animal sheltering world. Both “No-Kill” and open-door organizations want euthanasia to end. You can help reduce euthanasia rates by spaying or neutering your pets, adopting from a shelter, and supporting your local animal shelter with monetary donations or volunteer time. ***

Sound Bites

Thursday, April 4, doors open at 4:00pm.

Happy Hour, $5.
@ 6:30pm-9:00pm:
The Whiskey Sisters are going to be rockin’ the house in a big way every Thursday! The Whiskey Sisters is a co-chick fronted rock/blues/country band! Teal Collins (The Mother Truckers) and Barbara Nesbitt (Tim Flannery & The Lunatic Fringe) met in Austin and decided to get together to sing a tune or two. By the time they reached the first chorus harmonies they knew it was going to be a good thing. They have been working hard to form their new band, The Whiskey Sisters, which is a sound like nothing else you’ve heard. Joined by crack musicians, they are going to take the world by storm.

Late Show, $15 cover at the door. No advance tickets!
@ 10:00pm: The Jungle Rockers For three Cleveland expatriates, turns out nothing heavy was happening at the Double Down in Las Vegas, easter weekend 2005. It was thereupon agreed that the best and only antidote to this lack of action was to adopt Austin, Texas as a crash pad and form a proper bargain-basement R&B combo. Which was done, once having located a bass player. Ronnie Dawson, The Hawks avec Ronnie Hawkins et Bob Dylan tous les deux, Bo Diddley, the Rolling Stones, the Clash, Lee “Scratch” Perry and the Kershaw brothers—these are all retained as spiritual advisors to the Jungle Rocker camp. Some swear by the two extant EPs (self-titled and “Cool it Out”, respectively); others insist that the gigs afford a glimpse of the true cross. All are superlative. Ask the French.
@ 11:30pm: *Southern Culture On The Skids* From their 1985 debut Voodoo Beach Party, to the international smash, 1998’s Dirt Track Date (featuring the hit single “Camel Walk”), and up to 2007’s gender bending album of cover tunes — Countrypolitan Favorites, Southern Culture on the Skids have continued to throw what Rolling Stone dubbed “a hell raising rock and roll party.” Their 2005 live outing, Doublewide and Live!, captured all of this on tape, dirty, rough, wild and above all fun!! 2010 saw the band’s first self-release, The Kudzu Ranch, plus the reissue of their classic 1991 album, Too Much Pork For Just One Fork. In 2011 the band released the out of print 1996 Santo Swings EP digitally for the first time ever on Cinco de Mayo.

Late Show, $20 cover at the door. No advance tickets! Welcome Lonestar Rod & Kustom Round Up!
@ 8:30pm: The Jade Idol The Jade Idol is a no-bullshit combo that takes classic early r&r/r&b influences straight to the garage; raw, loud, and honest.
Formed in 2009 and fronted by Bob Bleed, late of Milwaukee garage namesake Bleed, the band initially made it’s mark as a two-piece ala Flat Duo Jets, with Mark Ford (Magnet School, Schatzi) on drums. Both well known in the international hot rod/custom car scene, the band found it’s first fanbase through car shows and club parties. Bob paid his dues on the infamous midwest garage rock circuit, sharing the stage with The White Stripes, Detroit Cobras, The Dirtbombs, The Oblivians and more. After a job brought him to Austin, he found a kindred musical spirit in co-worker and fellow hot rod builder Mark Ford. Mark is a gifted musician, having played drums in Schatzi since 2000, and singing and playing guitar in heavy post-punk rockers Magnet School. His explosive style was the perfect foil for Bob’s music. After a few years as a duo, the band added John Speck, late of Detroit bands The Fags and The Paybacks, on bass. John spent years on the road and has a resume that includes tours with bands such as the Foo Fighters, Descendents and Rancid to name a few, records on A&M, RCA and Sire/WB, as well as numerous indie releases and session work. An Austin resident the last 4 years, he elevates the band to another level in volume and attitude. After releasing their first full length record “No Control” last year, the band is busy writing and recording for a 7-inch release this spring, and touring the US and Europe this summer.
@ 10:00pm: *Bobby Patterson & The Disciples* Like many other Dallas-based blues musicians, Bobby Patterson is a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist who continued the soul-blues tradition of people like Bobby “Blue” Bland, Otis Redding, and Wilson Pickett. But unlike some of these other singers, Patterson has worked in all aspects of the blues record business: as a songwriter, producer, promotion man, and label owner. Patterson began performing when he was ten, playing guitar and drums. While still in his early teens, he formed a band called the Royal Rockers, who won talent contests in and around Dallas. Patterson recorded for the Jetstar label for the six years, becoming a talented songwriter, producer, and promotion man in the process. Patterson has worked with Fontella Bass, Chuck Jackson, and Little Johnny Taylor. Patterson’s songs have been recorded by Albert King (“That’s What the Blues Is All About”) and the Fabulous Thunderbirds, who recorded and had success with his “How Do You Spell Love?” More recently, Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy sang Patterson’s song “She Don’t Have to See You (To See Through You)” on Golden Smog’s Down by the Old Mainstream album.
@ 12:00am (Midnight): *Southern Culture On The Skids* Now the band has just released their latest slab of wax, Zombified as an LP (on blood red vinyl), a CD, and digital download. Southern Culture On The Skids’ tribute to the horror and exploitation movies that populated Southern theaters and drive-ins during the 60s and 70s, the Zombified Extended Reissue has been released on Kudzu Records. Originally released in Australia as an eight song EP in 1998, Zombified is now a full-length album with the addition of five new tunes.

@ 10:00pm: *James Burton* After 45 years in the recording business, the millennium ended, but the 2000′s had more in store for James. Burton makes frequent appearances at fan club conventions mostly in Europe. But in 2001 came the recognition he should have gotten years ago: James was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March of that year. Keith Richards, Rolling Stones guitarist and long time Burton fan, inducted James. “I never bought a Ricky Nelson record, I bought a James Burton record.” In 2009, James won a Grammy for Best Country Instrumental Performance, together with Vince Gill, Steve Wariner, Redd Volkaert, Albert Lee, John Jorgenson, and Brent Mason for the Brad Paisley track “Cluster Pluck.” In August of that year, James celebrated his 70th birthday with another International Guitar Festival to raise funds for his foundation. Before the big show on the 22nd, James was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame.
@ 12:00pm: *Southern Culture On The Skids* The new and improved Zombified has been re-mastered and re-packaged with cover art by Sean Starwars and design by Yee Haw industries. Rick Miller, guitarist and singer for the band said, “you know, the Zombified EP never had a proper U.S. release and the band is excited about it happening now as a full album.” The album is available in all formats, CD, digital download and LP. “A love of low-rent horror flicks — the kind where sex and gore are almost necessary by-products as long as they don’t make the movie come in over budget — fits right in with the SCOTS’ rural roots music vision. The title track rolls on guitar hooks deep fried in reverb from Miller and a fat, high-carb backbeat courtesy of Hartman. The resulting music is a little surf, a little bit psychobilly and a whole lot of fun when the lyrics sink in (“my girl’s more dead than alive”).” ~Walter Tunis, Kentucky.com.

: Long before there was something called alt-country, The Wagoneers made high-intensity, twang-infused music that combined the sounds and subject matter of traditional country with the raw energy of rock and roll. Respectful of what came before yet brash enough to make it their own, they showed everybody that playing country could be cool. Formed in 1986, the band played the very first South By Southwest festival in 1987. In 1988, the Wagoneers released Stout & High and quickly followed with Good Fortune in 1989. They received rave reviews, played on Austin City Limits, at the Grand Old Opry, and found themselves sharing the stage with both country and rock legends. Then, in late 1989, they suddenly called it quits, but not before establishing themselves as originators and innovators. They truly helped lay the foundation for the Americana and alt-country movement of the 1990′s.
In 2011, the Wagoneers were asked to get together and play a brief set at the Austin Music awards to coincide with their induction into the Austin Music Hall of Fame. The band found that playing together again felt so natural, they booked a few shows around town. Next thing you know, there’s a full-fledged Wagoneer’s revival going on. The band has re-released their first two albums on CD as The Essential Wagoneers and they are working on a new album. The original four members of the band are the ones making this happen, so it’s not one of those reunions with just one or two original members. The most impressive thing is that you would never know that the band ever broke up. They don’t sound like a band that took a twenty-plus year hiatus. The response at their shows makes it seem like they’ve been together with their audience the entire time.” ~Mathew Sturtevant, The Sound of Austin Portraits.

“When country music was ‘discovered’ to be more popular than rock and a host of other genres in the 90s it seemed to prompt Nashville and elsewhere to aim to be everything for everyone. To some extent they succeeded, but they gave up something in the process, and if you want to get a taste of what that something is here it is. I love these songs, and the way these guys play them and write them it’s obvious they do too. I’ve seen them a number of times at the Continental and the audience is madeup of a crazy mixture of hipsters, drunks, punks dancing with sexy grandmas and a smattering of Austin’s best musicians. The music transcends a lot of the usual barriers. Whether of not you went to church you can still get a little bit of heaven on a Sunday night.” ~David Byrne, Talking Heads.

@ 10:00pm: Two Tons of Steel Before there was Americana, before there was Texas Country, Two Tons of Steel front man Kevin Geil and his original band, “Dead Crickets,” rocked a sound that blended the best of musical worlds and pushed the envelope of “Texas” sound with a signature brand of high-energy country meets raw punk. The San Antonio-based group packed the small bars and local hangouts and quickly became the Alamo City’s most-loved band, earning them a spot on the cover of Billboard Magazine in 1996. It was the beginning of a twenty year journey for Geil and the 4-piece ensemble.

When they plunge into Orange Blossom Special your thoughts turn not so much to runaway trains as to a B-52 tearing up a runway.” ~Clive Davis, The Times (London).

@ 10:00pm: Jon Dee Graham A former member of the True Believers with Alejandro Escovedo, Graham is the only musician ever to be inducted into the Austin Music Hall of Fame three times. Jon Dee Graham is most well known for his solo work, including the critically acclaimed records “Escape from Monster Island”, “Hooray For The Moon”, and “Full”. He is also well known for his tenure in The Skunks, Austin’s very first punk band, and roots-rock pioneers The True Believers with Alejandro Escovedo. Jon Dee has also played guitar with acts such as John Doe (X, The Knitters), Exene Cervenka (X), Michelle Shocked, Alejandro Escovedo, Kelly Willis, and The Gourds and has had his songs covered by many artists, including Patty Smythe, Patty Griffin and James McMurtry.
@ 12:00pm: James McMurtry “The simple fact is that James McMurtry may be the truest, fiercest songwriter of his generation…” ~Stephen King, Entertainment Weekly. “James McMurtry is a true Americana poet – actually he is a poet regardless of genre” ~Michael Nesmith. “James writes like he’s lived a lifetime.” ~John Mellencamp. Never one to rest on his laurels, James McMurtry continues to tour constantly, and consistently puts on a “must-see” powerhouse performance. ‘The Washington Post’ noted McMurtry’s live prowess: “Much attention is paid to James McMurtry’s lyrics, and rightfully so: He creates a novel’s worth of emotion and experience in four minutes of blisteringly stark couplets. What gets overlooked, however, is that he’s an accomplished rock guitar player. At a sold-out Birchmere, the Austin-based artist was joined by drummer Daren Hess and bassist Ronnie Johnson in a set that demonstrated the raw power of wince-inducing imagery propelled by electric guitar. It was serious stuff, imparted by a singularly serious band.”

Each of the members are unique and talented singer-songwriters who have fronted previous bands, creating an eclectic sound that mashes together Americana, Blues, Country, and Soul with a gritty twist.
@ 12:00pm: Baby Atlas is a roots influenced power trio based in Austin, Texas. Each member hails from a different corner of Texas, and brings different influences to the band. David Jimenez (guitar/vox), has a distinctive sound in his playing, something difficult to do in the electric guitar Mecca that is Austin. He draws on many influences with his soulful voice in the style of Shuggie Otis and Donny Hathaway. The rhythm section of Wendy Simmons (bass/vox) and David Carroll (drums) has a unique chemistry. Simmons, is influenced by her gospel upbringing. She is a multi talented singer/bassist/arranger and loves her some Ludwig Van and George Porter Jr. Carroll, aka Pow, lists his influences as Bernard Purdie and Levon Helm. He prefers grooves that are honest and heartfelt. Together they deliver the goods as Baby Atlas, Austin’s premier roots based power trio.

With a reputation for high-energy shows that precedes them, Ruby Dee and The Snakehandlers deliver to capacity crowds in clubs, festivals and events
@ 12:00am (Midnight): Igor & The Red Elvises If Igor and Red Elvises aren’t in the middle of a tour, they are getting ready for the next one - this is a group that is constantly in motion and consistently evolving. Singer, songwriter, guitarist and showman extraordinaire Igor Yuzov is perpetually globetrotting and in the process he has found scores of wildly talented, entertaining musicians to bring into the fold of this increasingly international party band. Red Elvises started as a Russian group, playing what they dubbed “Siberian Surf Rock”. Since then the band has included musicians from many other countries including United States, Israel, Puerto Rico and Bulgaria, to name just a few. Everyone who performs with them for any length of time brings something different both energetically and musically. At various times shows have included keyboards, accordions, sax, clarinet, trumpet, flute, banjo, mandolin, tuba and many other instruments. Old and new fans alike can expect to be surprised at shows again and again, however the roots of Red Elvises remain the same: Igor’s unique brand of humor combined with guitar based rock’n’roll that makes audiences want to sing, dance, scream and shout.

@ 10:00pm: Roxy Roca “Those who say real soul music is dead clearly haven’t heard Roxy Roca. The Austin band has been tearing up the town with their voluptuous funk-infused soul music, and this year they will be hitting SXSW in hopes of spreading the musical gospel.” ~Neil Ferguson, The Horn. Asked about their sound, Taye responds “I would call it gritty Southern soul with funky, driving horns. In terms of influences go, if we were making a cocktail, I would say we are 1 part Wilson Pickett, 1 part Joe Tex, 1 1/2 parts James Brown, a dash of Tower of Power, and just a squeeze of Al Green.” The band continues to hone their chops and develop their sound. They recently went into Clockright Studio with producer Jason Richard to commit some sounds to tape, resulting in the band’s first single, “Ain’t Nothin’ Fancy (It’s Love),” a 60s-inspired slab of funk / soul grooves that would make Berry Gordy smile.
@ 12:00pm: Tameca Jones Coined the “Tina Turner of jazz” due to her long legs, fierce hair, and aggressive vocal stylings, Tameca Jones is a rare creature—an Austin, TX musician actually born and raised in the musical city. Since embarking on her mission to put her unique and soulful spin on covers in 2008, she has taken the local scene by storm with her potpourri of jazz, blues, rock, and soul. She opened for Gary Clark Jr., BB King, Smokey Robinson, David Sanborn and Joey Defrancesco, Oleta Adams, Take 6, Al Di Meola, Robert Cray, Ruben Studdard, and many other notable artists. In the summer of 2010, she won a prestigious contest that allowed her to open for Jill Scott, Anthony Hamilton, and Mint Condition.

They play real country music to keep the tradition started by the legends before them alive.
@ 3:00pm: Horse Opera Real country music. A natural mix of traditional honky tonk, bluegrass, and hillbilly music.  Songs of the human condition, the good and the bad. Two CD releases, 8 national tours and a broken down van later, they are back in Texas, rebuilding the music machine. In 2012, Horse Opera added Mr. Chris ‘Howdy’ Darrell to the band.  Howdy is playing acoustic guitar and mandolin, and writing and singing some great new originals.
Horse Opera also added Heather Rae Johnson on fiddle and vocals, and Chris Wallis is back on the drums!
@ 4:00pm: Brennen Leigh “If what passes for country music these days gives you a headache, Brennen Leigh has the remedy.” So wrote the Austin Chronicle in a review of the talented singer-songwriter’s latest album The Box. Art show openings will usually take place on the First Thursday of each month at 7pm when the doors open, and will run for the entire month. This will be the general rule, although as with everything in this business, there may be exceptions. Art can also be shown during the day by appointment by sending an email to Steve to make arrangements. Check this section regularly for news on current & upcoming shows.

April Art Exhibit Mark Havens is a Philadelphia-based artist whose work has been exhibited in galleries nationwide. Reviews of his work have
appeared in a variety of publications including Title Magazine and The Philadelphia Inquirer as well as online venues such as
Flak Photo and Curated. In addition to his studio practice, Mark is a full-time professor in the Industrial Design Department at Philadelphia University,
where he is the director of the program’s foundation year.
Displacement is an exploration of primary aesthetic memories – the fragments of color and shape that are powerful catalysts in the formation of each of us. The images traffic in a mystery and meaning beyond their origin in the hot rod model decals of the artist’s early childhood. These slivers of memory are transmuted through scale and structure, revealing themselves as seminal totems of enormous potency. Displacement evokes – or more precisely exhumes – a distant internal universe of memory, emotion and desire.
Photographed using a five-power magnification lens, many of the originals are an inch or less in actual size. The shattered-glass look seen in much of the work is, in fact, cracking of the layer of dextrose (sugar) glue that model companies used on their water-slide decal sheets so the glue would dissolve quickly in water. Many of the decals pictured are more than 50 years old. Over the decades, the expansion and contraction of the paper backing of the decals slowly cracks the fragile layer of sugar glue on top eventually creating the look you see here.

@ 8:30pm: James Robinson Free form punk jazz, electronic blues metal, down-tempo acoustic gospel… what is in a label anymore? If it has Soul it has Soul, if it don’t, it don’t. James Robinson is creating eclectic music with Soul. He works with many projects and delivers on music from jazz standards to electro-pop. He says the next generation of artists will truly blend their influences together to form a new expression of music and he wants to be part of that revolution! His latest album “The Invisible Man” was made mostly in a home studio with producer/songwriter Josh Crapo. They met at the oldest juke joint in Austin, TX. one night when James was performing and Josh was running sound. They proceeded to met once or twice a week over the next 18 months to write songs. Then they called in every musical favor that they could and got some great musicians to play on the songs in order to make their rough demos into a record. The result is an upbeat, quirky, catchy set of songs with influences from pop, jazz, electronica, lo-fi rock and R&B. This is the new world music. This is the sound of the soul in an album made with few dollars and lots of love. All love.
Late Show, no cover
@ 10:30pm: Tameca Jones owns Thursday nights! Coined the “Tina Turner of jazz” due to her long legs, fierce hair, and aggressive vocal stylings, Tameca Jones brews a fragrant potpourri of jazz, blues, rock, and soul with her quintet. She has opened for Smokey Robinson, David Sanborn and Joey Defrancesco, Oleta Adams, Take 6, and many other notable artists. Her honeyed tone and passionate, soulful renditions of jazz and rock classics captivate her audience. Backed by Wayne Salzmann II on drums, Jake Langley on guitar, and a rotating cast of bassists and pianists, her quintet serves honey buttered performances to the hungry patrons of Austin and San Antonio.

@ 8:30pm: The Robert Kraft Trio will be performing American popular song, originals, Seventies pop and soul. It’s more about songs than genres. Clean, tight arrangements that emphasize the beauty and lyricism of the songs. If they like a song, they will do it, no matter what era it hails from. Robert Kraft- voice; JD Pendley- guitar; Lindsay Greene- upright bass. You can pick up one of their CDs too!
Late Show, $5
@ 10:30pm: This week’s edition of the Mike Flanigin B-3 Trio, features guitaristJohnny Moeller & the inimitable Barry “Frosty” Smith on drums! The Mike Flanigin Trio features Mike on Hammond organ amplified through a classic Leslie cabinet. His backing players vary from night to night, but you count on it being the cream of Austin’s crop in jazz, blues or funk. Jon Moeller is a blues guitarist currently with The Fabulous Thunderbirds. He had early exposure to music in the home as his father played a little boogie-woogie piano and was constantly listening to music. He started playing guitar in his early teen year. Moeller’s main influences have been from Freddie King, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Earl King and Grant Green. Lesser, but meaningful influences come from a wide variety of other blues, soul and funk artists. The Austin Chronicle quoted Clifford Antone (who also helped launch Stevie Ray Vaughan) as saying: “Johnny, nobody can burn like that kid. He’s got the heart like Stevie had, about the only one I’ve seen with that kind of heart. Johnny’s so quiet and bashful, just a sweet kid and sometimes those kids get overlooked.” By the time Moeller had joined The Fabulous Thunderbirds in mid 2007 he had recorded, played regularly with, or toured North America, Europe and Scandinavia with Darrell Nulisch, Lou Ann Barton, Mike Barfield, Doyle Bramhall II, Gary Primich, and Guy Forsyth.

@ 8:30pm: Jon Dee Graham & Bonnie Whitmore. The Jon Dee & Friend Show is an acoustic format with Jon Dee playing guitar, lap steel and who knows what else. Each week he invites a special guest to join him for a semi-acoustic concert punctuated by stories that will bring lots of laughter and maybe even a few tears. Jon Dee has a way of getting his fellow musicians to relax & talk & share stories that you probably haven’t ever heard before. It’s not just music - it’s also part talk show & part comedy hour, and 100% genuine. Bonnie Whitmore learned her way around country music early, touring at the ripe old age of 8 with her parents and her sister, Eleanor, in a traveling roadshow. Whitmore may have a heart of gold, an outsize personality and a roof-raising laugh, but don’t be fooled: her debut album has a body count. No fewer than two men die by Bonnie’s own hand over the course of the record: one of them is burned alive, one the victim of a knife that, in Whitmore’s own words, “just slipped.”
@ 10:30pm:
Dupree, a trio of B3 organ (Mike Flanigin), guitar (Jake Langley) and drums, is in the Gallery on Sunday nights! Flanigin says “Dupree recorded a record at Public Hi-Fi with Jim Eno live to 2-track analog tape (no mixing!). The record will be mastered directly to vinyl so it will stay completely in the analog domain. More details later but we are excited about this project.”

@ 8:30pm:
Church on Monday with Elias Haslanger, featuring Dr. James Polk and Jake Langley will be in this spot through the end of the February. Elias’ latest CD, “Church on Monday,” was inspired by the early 60s Blue Note recordings by Stanley Turrentine and Jimmy Smith. The quintet is partially made up of jazz saxophonist and composer Elias Haslanger, with James Polk on B3 and Jake Langley on guitar.
@ 10:30pm: Sit Down, Servant!! Gordie Johnson’s new project – Sit Down, Servant!! – gives him the chance to combine blues and gospel with dub in his own unique way. Accompanied by Big Sugar drummer Stephane Beaudin on drums, Johnson sings and plays guitar along with his Moog bass pedals for a rousing electric set of boot-stomping tunes being heard by audiences for the first time. The musical talents of Gordie Johnson have long been an influence in the rock music world. His extraordinary guitar stylings are the driving force behind Big Sugar and Grady, two bands with large followings in North America. This is an excellent introduction to another side of the man and his music.

@ 8:30pm, $10: James McMurtry began playing these intimate shows while getting ready to make a solo recording and to debut material, and work on songs for that project. It quickly gained momentum and McMurtry will continue the solo shows. “This intimate space doesn’t get enough credit for its low-key charm — you’d be hard-pressed to find a better listening room in town, perennial favorite the Cactus Cafe excepted. You couldn’t find a better place to see a solo acoustic set from clever Austin troubadour James McMurtry.” ~Patrick Caldwell, Austin American-Statesman.

@ 10:30pm:The Ephraim Owens Experienceis the brainchild of trumpet master in the jazz arena, Ephraim Owen. He is especially well known for his signature solos and ability to improvise. He has an uncanny ability to imagine his music laid on top of anything else he hears, and his adaptability makes him a welcome addition to any lineup. The Austin Chronicle ranks Ephraim as “Best Horn” in Austin. When Ephraim is out of town, Brannen Temple usually fills in for him.

@ 8:30pm: Barbara K returns to the Gallery with Mike Hardwick & Hector Munoz accompanying her! “A singer, songwriter, performer, musician and recording artist, who is also a mother, activist, visionary, innovator, entrepreneur and was a partner in Timbuk3, Kooyman is a fan, a believer, a nurturer and an advocate. Now if she only possessed one of those skills it would be amazing. It would be even more stunning if a whole section of those groupings were draped around her shoulders. But since each and every one of those words is appropriate to her, most being simply the opening idea for a whole essay on Barbara, then calling her just a wonderful person, gifted talent and strong performer is limiting rather than extolling.” ~Louis Black, Editor of The Austin Chronicle.
@ 10:30pm: Trube, Farrell & Snizz are Anthony Farrell and Andrew Trube of the Greyhounds, along with drummer Dave “Snizz” Robinson. They bring their mix of funk, soul and r&b to the Gallery every Wednesday night for a real happening scene. When Trube, Farrell are out of town, Snizz puts together a great band of co-horts to fill in. I don’t always know about these shows in advance, so check out Trube, Farrell & Snizz on Facebook for the most accurate info. Snizzlestrut or Snizz & Friends fills in for TF&S whenever Andrew Trube & Anthony Farrell are out of town. It’s always a groovin’ funky good time!

: Dan Dyer has returned to Thursdays and there’s NO COVER! Soul-folk singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Dan Dyer rose to prominence in Austin, TX during the late 90s as frontman of the much heralded blues-rock outfit, Breedlove. Dyer’s voice and live performance intensity are raw and hot, yet soulful and sensitive, drawing from a wealth of classic soul, blues, folk, and R&B legends.

She hits the stage with unmatched presence, a true legend in her time. “A dollop of Janis Joplin, a slice of Stevie Ray Vaughan, and a big load of soulful individuality… that’s Wonderland, a seething-hot Texas singer-guitarist.
